Just driving

Claire Moser photograph: Shangri-la weather.

I went back to Ojai this weekend. I hadn't been for a very long time and drove the coast road rather than coming in through the valley and the hills. Even behind the wheel, where good sense would dictate that I should watch where I'm going, you see things with fresh eyes when you come back. I had an east coast passenger so some informational, hopefully brief, lectures about California Peppers, oleanders, Live Oaks and Beatrice Wood provided the running commentary.

The valley is filled with citrus grove and small farms. The town is filled with bookstores, pottery, gauzy and preppy clothing stores, hippies and golfers.

strange how potent cheap things are [with apologies to nöel coward]

My New Year's resolution every year since 2000 has been to clean my desk. As that seemed like it wasn't going to happen again this year, my new resolution is to take pleasure in the treasures, distractions and work I've got in front of me.
